March Luncheon – Southern Parkway Design Challenges

Posted by on Mar 29, 2013 in Blog |

Utah Chapter ITE met on March 19th at Chinese Gourmet. With approximately 60 members in attendance, Aubry Bennion and Andy Powell from URS gave a presentation on the Southern Parkway design. URS was contracted for the design of phase 4 of 6. This segment had many unusual challenges, being in virgin terrain. Many archaeological sites were present that needed to be researched and mitigated. Among the artifacts preserved, archived, or relocated were rock art panels, open campsites, open habitation sites, human remains, and a paleontological site described as a ‘dinosaur bonanza!’ Extreme effort and care were put into this project to insure all environmental aspects were appropriately handled and sites were preserved or recorded for future generations. Please see attached power point for the slides from the presentation.
