The freeway operations engineer will guide the freeway operations responsibilities of the Traffic Management Division (TMD). UDOT is investigating next generation ramp metering and traffic management. This position is key in developing concepts and implementing advanced traffic management.
Current management areas for the freeway operations engineer include UDOT’s Express Lanes and Ramp Metering. In addition, the Freeway Operations engineer provides technical advice on electronic signing, variable speed limits and control room operations. Major tasks include
Analyze traffic and determine ramp metering rates – both static rates and by managing UDOT’s corridor responsive ramp metering program.
Advise on policy and procedure for the Express Lanes and implement approved policies and procedures.
Understand and contribute to the management of UDOT’s traffic detection system representing the use of detection for freeway operations.
Configure UDOT’s traffic operations software systems to display travel times on variable message signs.
Gain consensus with region traffic engineers on management of the express lanes in support of incidents and construction.
Manage the toll collection contracts and UDOT Express Lanes administrative staff.
The freeway operations engineer is an Engineer Manager I position that is responsible for supervision of one express lanes administrative employee and one engineer. The position will involve direct operational and decision-making duties and will also serve as a resource for technical questions for other operational, maintenance and deployment personnel.

Applicants who are within one year of meeting the preference of two years of engineering experience following their licensure as a PE may be considered at the Engineer III level.
